Does anyone else out there have a problem with foot ulcers? I have a small one that is healing and 1 that keeps closing up and coming back. I'm just wondering if anyone else has this problem and what you have done about it?
i haven't had any foot ulcers but my mother, who was a diabetic also, use to get them. when she had one that kept coming back she went to the doctor about it.which i feel you should do if it keeps coming back.the thing i learned from my mother's doctors is that when a diabetic gets a foot ulcer, it has the tendecy in diabetics to heal from the outside in. when you think it has healed but it keeps coming back it most likley isn't healing on the inside first, which is why one really needs to go to the doctor to get it looked at if it keeps coming back. it can lead to major problems if it isn't dealt with promptly.
They do heal from the outside in so basically they keep opening up. I have seen a podiatrist at least every month for the last 3 yrs. For awhile i was there every week or 2. I have had 2 surgerys to remove small bones near my big toe that were causing pressure. Again, the ulcer healed up but opened again. I have also been to a wound care specialist who got it to close but it didn't stay that way. The ulcer on this one foot started due to some surgery i had for a bad infection in my foot. They got rid of the infection but i've had problems ever since.
i don't know if this treatment is available to you or if your insurance will pay for it... but you should consider asking your doctor about it... the treatment i am speaking of is hyperbarics. it is sometimes a lengthy process. but it is worth it..when my mother would have a stubborn ulcer they used hyperbarics and the ulcer would heal properly.i'm not sure if you know what hyperbarics is but in case you don't...it is a chamber they put u in..they use pressurized oxygen. it helps to speed the healing process and allows the ulcer heal from the inside out like it is suppose to. most insurance companies cover it.it helped my mother a lot, but they waited till she had 6 toes removed before they started using it. it is an idea that could be worth checking into..i am constantly looking over my hubby's feet and mine because a little sore or cut can quickly turn very serious in diabetics.
I do know what it is but my insurance wouldn't cover something like that. I'm actually having problems with them covering medications that they have paid for - for years!
well isn't that the pits.i would say it is time to find a better insurance if it weren't for the fact that a lot of insurance companies don't cover a pre-existing problem for the first 2 years.
I'm on SSI so i have "gov't" insurance. It's actually great to have because it does cover MOST of my perscriptions and i don't have to pay for them since i'm on a very limited income. It's very annoying when they suddenly stop paying for some and my doctor has to start switching medications. This has happened a few times in the last couple of years.
i know i am on medicare and medical...and i know medicare covers hyprberics.. i also know they recently have changed what meds they cover . i have been taking a blood pressure med for 6 years.. and know they stop covering it and what i am on now doesn't help. but thank goodness they do cover most of my meds.
